DEFINICE
Kyseliny jsou sloučeniny, které ve vodných roztocích kromě kationtů vodíku neodštěpují žádný jiný kationt.

NÁZVOSLOVÍ
Bezkyslíkaté kyseliny
Jejich názvy se tvoří slovem kyselina a přidáním koncovky -ová k názvu původní sloučeniny.

Kyslíkaté kyseliny (oxokyseliny)
Názvosloví kyselin záleží na oxidačním čísle (náboji) kyselinotvorného prvku. Podíváme se na vzorec H2SO4. Z něj vidíme, že iontů vodíků je 2, síry 1 (jednička se nepíše) a kyslíků 4. Náboj kationtu vodíku je +1, a protože vodíku máme dva, celkový náboj je +2. Kyslík má náboj -2 a z toho vyplývá, že celkový náboj je -8. Součet nábojů se musí rovnat nule. Co se týče síry, její náboj x budeme muset zjistit jednoduchou rovnici: sečteme si všechny náboje po pořádku +2 + x -8 = 0. Řešení: x= +6
Po zjištění oxidačního čísla si odvodíme název tak, že k názvu kyselinotvorného prvku (v tomto případě k síře) přiřadíme odpovídající koncovku. Podle tabulky si tu koncovku vyhledáme. Bude to vypadat následovně: síra + -ová = kyselina sírová.
Jestliže prvek tvoří v témže oxidačním čísle dvě čí více jednoduchých oxokyselin, zpřesňují se názvy těchto oxokyselin tak, že pomocí číslovkových předpon se vyjádří počet vodíků (předpona hydrogen-).

GRAFICKÉ VZORCE
Grafické vzorce znázorňují nejen složení molekuly, ale i způsob vazby mezi jednotlivými ionty. Pro napsání grafického vzorce kyseliny budeme se řídit následujícími postupy a pravidly:
1. Vypočítáme oxidační číslo každého prvku molekuly.
2. Ke každému iontu musí vést takové množství čár (vazeb), které odpovídá zjištěnému oxidačnímu číslu v b.1.
3. V bezkyslíkatých binárních kyselinách kationt vodíku H+, který se při chemických reakcích může vyměnit na jiný kationt, se připojuje k kyselinotvornému prvku přímo.
4. V kyslíkatých kyselinách kationt vodíku H+, který se při chemických reakcích může vyměnit na jiný kationt, se připojuje k kyselinotvornému prvku přes kyslík.
5. Mezi ionty se stejným znamínkem náboje nesmí být spojení (kromě některých sloučenin například peroxidů).

CHEMICKÉ VLASTNOSTI
Kyseliny reagují:
1) se zásadotvornými oxidy; vzniká sůl a voda:
H2SO4 + K2O = K2SO4 + H2O - síran draselný + voda
2) s amfoterními oxidy; vzniká sůl a voda:
6HCl + Al2O3 = 2AlCl3 + 3H2O - chloritan hlinitý + voda:
3) s hydroxidy (reakce neutralizace); vzniká sůl a voda:
H2S + 2LiOH = Li2S + 2H2O - sulfid litný + voda
4) s amfoterními hydroxidy; vzniká sůl a voda:
2HNO3 + Zn (OH)2 = Zn (NO3)2 + 2H2O - dusičnan zinečnatý + voda
5) se solemi; vzniká nová kyselina a nová sůl:
a) silná kyselina "vytlačuje" ze soli slabší kyselinu:
2HI + Na2SiO3 = H2SiO3 + 2NaI - kyselina křemičitá + jodid sodný
b) kyselina po reakci je těkavější než před reakcí:
2H3PO4 + 3K2S = 3H2S + 2K3PO4 - plynný sirovodík + fosforečnan draselný
c) vytvořená sůl je nerozpustná ve vodě:
H2S + Cu(NO3)2 = 2HNO3 + CuS - kyselina dusičná + sulfid měďnatý (sraženina)
6) kyseliny (s výjimkou dusičné, koncentrované sírové a některých jiných) reagují s kovy, které v pořadí chemické aktivity jsou vlevo od vodíku:
